Week 3/19-3/23

Last week, students finished reading Fahrenheit 451. Many of the students enjoyed discussing the book and the symbolic depth that it offers, while others were just glad that it was over--you can't please everyone! One thing, whether the students liked the book or not, their analytical skills grew, which was the ultimate goal. Click below to see their novel critiques where they either convince Mrs. Cherry to read the novel or convince her to not waste her time reading the novel--some of them are pretty entertaining! Click here for a link to their #BookSnaps Padlet that discusses the symbolic title throughout each part of the novel too. I love sharing awesome work with all of you!

This week, students will work in cooperative learning groups of up to four students of their choice to collaborate in order to create a symbolic soundtrack that follows the hero's journey. The in-class project should be "fun" as students get to tie their passion for music, working with friends, and learning all together in one.

Week 3/12-3/16

Last week, students wrote what I consider to be the most difficult essay of the year since it asks students to apply analytical reasoning in regards to two difficult texts. Click here to read an outstanding student example! After the essay, students continued reading Fahrenheit 451 and paid particular attention to the hero's journey and biblical allusions.
This week, students will finish reading the novel and watching the 1966 movie. Instead of writing another essay, I decided to try something different--collaborative stations. Through these stations, students will work collaboratively in partners and groups looking at symbolism, plot, character theme songs, and reviewing the novel (this will be to convince Ms. Cherry to either read the novel or not). Students should enjoy this a bit more than an essay, but it will still get them critically thinking, collaborating with each other, and writing (always my goals)!

Week 3/5-3/9

Last week, students finished reading "The Sieve and the Sand" from Fahrenheit 451 and analyzing Matthew Arnold's poem "Dover Beach." The majority of students are enjoying this novel and the discussion that goes along with it--it is not an easy novel to understand when looking beyond the literal. The level of critical thinking and analysis they are doing is amazing!

This week, students will write a group essay. I know, I know. Another essay and a group one at that! This is a difficult writing prompt, so having three brains (each one writing a body paragraph on their own and being assessed separately) and then collectively writing the introduction and conclusion will aid their understanding while also continuing to develop their academic writing skills. Students will then read the last part of Fahrenheit 451 "Burning Bright."
