Week 8/28-9/1

Last week, students had their first 5-day week! It was a long one, but they were troopers. For most the week, students learned how to be good digital citizens in today's tech focused world. They learned about leaving a positive digital footprint (they were shocked to see how much information is on the internet), fair use and copyright infringement (click here to watch a video of them explaining their fair use memes: Period 1, Period 2, Period 4, and Period 5), and about cyberbullying (click here to watch them summarize cyberbullying: Period 1, Period 2, Period 4, and Period 5). They summed up the importance of digital citizenship on Twitter using the #tollgvms

This week, we will finish setting up the class blogs and embedding their digital citizenship hyperdocs into the blog (this will allow you to see the work they are doing in the classroom--I love to break down the classroom walls). We will also start our ELA Reference Notebooks (similar to Ms. Mansour's notebooks from last year, but with an 8th-grade focus). While they take a little while to setup, the notebooks pay off because it becomes a reference that they can use throughout the year and even beyond middle school (my former students are still using them in high school).

AR Log Check (Log-5 entries/Signature)
*Students need to be reading an AR book that has a reading level of 3.0+ for 30 minutes 5 nights per week. Students need to earn 35 points by every checkpoint (10/11, 12/13, 03/14, and 05/30). Please see the AR Log for more information. All quizzes must be taken in my room either before school, at lunch, after school, or during their class period.
